1. The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman
This is the book that makes you angry at doors. And apps. And bad buttons. Norman teaches you one brutal truth. If users struggle, it is not their fault. It is yours. After this book, you will never design without thinking about real people again. Also you will judge badly designed things everywhere. Welcome to the curse.
2. Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton
Typography is not about choosing a cool font and calling it a day. This book explains type in a clear and practical way. Hierarchy, spacing, alignment, all the stuff that silently makes or breaks a design. If your layouts feel off and you cannot explain why, start here.
3. Grid Systems in Graphic Design by Josef Müller Brockmann
This book is strict. Very strict. No fluff. Just logic, structure, and discipline. It teaches you how to create order in chaos. You might hate it at first. Then one day your designs suddenly feel clean and confident. Grids are not boring. Bad designers make them boring.
4. Don’t Make Me Think by Steve Krug
Short, sharp, and painfully honest. This book is about usability but it applies to all design. If people have to think too much, you already failed. Krug writes like a human, not a textbook. You will finish this fast and start deleting unnecessary stuff from your designs immediately.
5. Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon
Relax. No one is fully original. This book gives you permission to learn from others without guilt. It is not about copying, it is about connecting ideas and adding your voice. Great read when you feel stuck or fake. We all do sometimes 🤷♂️
